Activities of the American Jewish Woman

An appeal to women throughout the country to boycott German goods is being made by Mrs. Mark Harris, chairman of the women’s division of the American League for the Defense of Jewish Rights. Mrs. Harris has won the cooperation of the non-Jewish woman to whom she has appealed on humanitarian grounds. The organization in Greater New York has taken upon itself to form groups of women to be known as “vigilants” whose job it is to canvas every store in the city to look for German merchandise. When such goods is found the women then take to writing chain letters to the store asking for the replacement of German manufactures by the products of other countries.

Mrs. Harris feels very strongly that the women of this country, because of the fact that they form seventy-five per cent of the consumer’s group, can succeed in establishing an effective boycott.

TO HEAR PARTIES’ CLAIMS

The Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations, of which Mrs. David E. Goldfarb is president, will hold its first meeting of the season next Wednesday, in the auditorium of Congregation Emanu-El Community House, 1 East 65th Street, at 10:15 A. M. The program of this meeting will be devoted to the municipal election. Miss Susan Brandeis will discuss the platform of the Recovery Party, Bernard S. Deutsch the Fusion Party, Abraham Kaplan the Democratic Party and Charles Solomon the Socialist Party.

The Physician Wives League is the 201st organization to become affiliated with the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations.

HARVEST LUNCHEON

A Harvest Luncheon will be held by the Ansche Chesed Sisterhood at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Tuesday, October 17. Mrs. Gerstein heads the committee in charge of arrangements.

COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN

Mrs. Mary G. Schonberg, executive secretary of the National Council of Jewish Women, will make an extensive field trip through the Middle Atlantic States which will include visits to Atlantic City, N. J., Greensboro, N. C., Richmond, Va., and Raleigh, N. C. Mrs. Schonberg will address the delegates to the Middle Atlantic States Conference at Greenboro on the subject of Leadership. She will also be the guest speaker for the Inter-State Conference of the Council of Jewish Women of Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana on November 1.

The officers and members of the National Council of Jewish Women are planning to arrange a Council Table for the dinner to be given in honor of Dr. Sherwood Eddy at the Hotel Commodore on Tuesday evening.

SYNAGOGUES’ WOMEN’S LEAGUE

The New Jersey Branch of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America will hold a state-wide conference on December 4 at Temple B’nai Abraham in Newark. Mrs. Leon S. Lang will be program chairman, Mrs. Leopold Rich will be chairman of arrangements and Mrs. S. A. Reitman will head the committee on nominations.

The Peace Committee of New Jersey, of which Mrs. L. H. Fradkin is chairman, is pledged to cooperate this winter with the New Jersey Committee on the Cause and Cure of War. Mrs. Nathan Kussy of Newark is the National Chairman for Peace of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue.

Mrs. Lillia Kavovitz will speak on “Women in Banking” on Wednesday afternoon, October 18 at three o’clock over station WINS, under the auspices of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue.

HOSPITAL AUXILIARY LUNCHEON

The annual luncheon of the Boro Park Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Israel Zion Hospital will be held at the Hotel Astor on Wednesday afternoon, October 18.
