A joint campaign of the Hadassah, Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and the American Physicians’ Committee, to raise $200,000 for the erection of the Hadassah-University Hospital in Jerusalem, will be launched today. The institution will serve as Hadassah’s chief hospital in Palestine and as a postgraduate medical research institute for the Hebrew University.

Mrs. Edward Jacobs of this city, who recently returned after a year’s residence in Palestine; Mrs. Alexander Lamport, of Mt. Vernon, and Dr. Emanuel Libman, of the American Physicians’ Committee, are joint chairmen of the campaign.

Sub-committees have been organized in all of the 256 Hadassah chapters throughout the country. The funds raised in this drive will be distinct from the Hadassah annual health work budget of £42,000.

The exact location of the hospital has not yet been determined. Whether the building will be erected on Mt. Scopus, near the Hebrew University, or in Jerusalem proper, is under consideration. The site for the hospital will be provided by the Jewish National Fund.

“When completed the Hadassah-University Hospital Building will serve Palestine and the Near East in a similar capacity proportionately to that of the Rockefeller Institute here,” Mrs. Jacobs declared. “It is hoped that outstanding German scientists, whom Hadassah is now placing in the various departments of its existing institutions, will eventually be appointed as heads of departments in the hospital. The Hebrew University will control the academic aspects of the institution.

“The new project represents the culminating efforts of twenty years of work in the field of public health in Palestine on the part of Hadassah. In the past few years Hadassah has been able through the development of community organization, to transfer gradually some of its curative health work to the communities themselves, thus releasing funds and activities for expanding preventive medical work. The Hadassah-University Hospital will be a high point in the emphasis on prevention and health education. It will make possible the synchronous advancement of two of the major features in the development of modern Palestine—health and education.”

NATIONAL COUNCIL PUBLISHES MAGAZINE

The initial copy of the current issue of “News Letter”, published by the National Council of Jewish Women, was circulated among members, throughout the nation this week from headquarters of the organization, 625 Madison Avenue.

In a leading editorial entitled “A Greeting from the President” over the signature of Mrs. Fanny Brin, president, the writer pleads for cooperation in fighting the “world depression and the major tragedy in the history of the American people.”

Mrs. Brin writes:

“We are living in the shadow of the great tragedy that is taking place in Germany. Again equality before the law, and fundamental human rights are being violated. We have though of ourselves in recent years as a tree whose fruit and shade might be a blessing to ourselves and others; now we are threatened at our very roots again. It has been a great shock to our generation but the far-reaching consequences may be felt even more by generations that will follow.”

Announcement is made on another page of News Letter that the ninth annual conference of the N.C.J.W. will be held in Washington on January 16 to 19.

The organization is cooperating with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in raising funds for the relief of Jews in Germany.

The play, “The School for Husbands”, a very entertaining musical comedy, was apparently enjoyed by everyone.

The Yeshivah is constantly adding friends and workers to its cause. This was indicated by the large attendance at their last meeting in the home of Mrs. A. E. Freedman.

It was then voted to have the next affair, an evening card party, on December 2nd, at the home of Mrs. H. Gliksman, 4008 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn.
