Dr. Konrad Adenauer, the retired Chancellor of the West German Government, today sent a cable to Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Claims Conference, thanking him for the understanding and confidence displayed in connection with West Germany’s reparations payments to Jewish victims of Nazism. The cable read:
“I thank you most sincerely for the message you sent me in connection with my retirement. I was especially glad to receive your telegram. You know how deeply interested I was to repair–as much as was in our power to do–the events of the unholy past. I therefore thank you now for your understanding, your cooperation and your confidence during all these years. I hope to see you during your next visit here.”
