Shimon Peres, Minister of Transport and Communication, said the increased number of American Jews emigrating here requires Israel to make adequate preparations for these Jews. Speaking to the Haifa Industrial Club, Peres stressed the importance of the American immigration and said that “Israel must make the conditions here suit the newcomers.” Observing that the average American Jew was most likely to settle in an urban area, he said Israeli officials should work at making Jerusalem the center for such urbanized immigration, and suggested establishing a university where the language spoken would be English rather than Hebrew.
