The national chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith appealed directly to President Richard M. Nixon yesterday to prevent government financing of a road leading to the “Christ of the Ozarks” project, a shrine promoted by “the notorious anti-Semite, Gerald L.K. Smith,” in Eureka Springs, Ark. In a telegram to the President, Dore Schary asked that he direct Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans and Transportation Secretary John Volpe to withdraw $182,000 of U.S. funds allocated for the road. Earlier direct representations to Mr. Stans and Mr. Volpe failed to forestall the grant.
