A message from Dr. Cyrus Adler praising Louis Marshall as “one of the greatest minds and souls that the Jewish people of America ever had” was read by Joseph Abrahams, secretary of the Jewish Theological Seminary, at the ceremonies at Salem Fields Cemetery, Brooklyn, yesterday marking the tenth anniversary of Marshall’s death.
The message follows:
“Ten years have passed since the Jewish community of America and of the world have been deprived of the mind and voice and heart of Louis Marshall. They have been fateful years. My colleagues have often said in these years, ‘I wonder what Marshall would have done in this situation or that.’ It is idle to speculate, but we should spend a few moments in remembering him after his ten years of passing.
“He was one of the greatest minds and souls that the Jewish people of America ever had, equally devoted to Jewish rights, to Judaism and to Jewish education. None of his work was in vain, however it may appear in the world now. It is well that the newer Jewish generations of America should rededicate themselves to the kind of Jewish work that Louis Marshall did, and if in every other generation at least one man of his type should arise it would be worth while the training of many thousands for such leadership. To me he was a good friend and a good companion. I always cherish his memory and so should the Jewish people of America and of the world.”
