High officials of the State Department and Department of Commerce told Congress today that they oppose a measure that would hamper the Arab boycott, because such a move would be harmful to the best interests of the United States.
These attitudes were voiced in testimony before the subcommittee on international trade of the House Committee on Banking and Currency by Under Secretary of State George Ball and Robert E. Giles, general counsel of the Commerce Department.
They requested the subcommittee to reject a proposed amendment to the Export Control Act which, they said, could “backfire” against U.S. interests and would be “unwise.” Rep. Thomas L. Ashley, Chio Democrat and chairman of the Committee, agreed with the Administration officials.
