Sir George Rendel, British representative on the United Nations Committee on Refugees and Displaced Persons, today asked the Soviet delegation whether the USSR would be willing to open the doors of Biro-Bidjan to Jewish refugees from other countries.
The Russian representative, M.R. Yerzin, said that he was unable to reply immediately, but promised to place the suggestion before his government, He said he would submit an answer to the committee as soon as possible. Rendel pointed out that admission of refugees to Biro-Bidjan would “contribute to the solution of a difficult problem.”
Over the opposition of Rendel, the committee has decided to follow the American and Russian suggestion that the international body to be established to handle the refugee problem should consist of representatives of the nations directly concerned with the problem, rather than be an agency of the United Nations. Such a recommendation will be made to the General Assembly by the committee.
