A spokeswoman for the Leadership Conference of Jewish Women’s Organizations, citing the murder of Israeli children by Arab terrorists at Kiryat Shemona and Maalot, said today the Conference had asked the United States to bring before UNICEF the issue of the victimization of children as a means of political action.
Mrs. Charlotte Stein, president of Pioneer Women, one of the nine Conference organizations, said a delegation from the Conference met with Michael Scelsi, U.S. representative to the UNICEF executive board, to discuss the problem and to ask for the United States to act. She said Scelsi told the women leaders he shared their concern.
The meeting with Scelsi was arranged after a Conference session at which a resolution was approved stating that “while all human life is infinitely precious, men and women of whatever race, creed or political persuasion must recognize that children are mankind’s most precious gift of life and hope that, in all circumstances they must be spared the trauma and the physical and psychological tragedies of war and guerrilla assault.”
She submitted to Scelsi a Conference statement asking UNICEF to “call upon the organs and agencies of the United Nations” to establish “effective methods” to punish any persons or groups violating “these basic codes without which the whole concept of international law and international community become compromised.”
