The special convention of the American Jewish Congress in Philadelphia on March 16 and 17 will be asked among other things “to take appropriate steps to create in American Jewish life an all-inclusive instrument for Jewish self-government in Jewish matters.”
This was announced yesterday by the American Jewish Congress headquarters in an invitation issued to Jewish national organizations affiliated with the Congress to participate in the Philadelphia session.
Explaining the purposes of the session, the communication states: “This decision was reached after long and careful consideration of the problems now facing American Jewry as such, and especially the problem of how American Jewry can most effectively cooperate with the Jews of the world in the defense of Jewish rights against the unparalleled attacks that are being made upon them in many countries.
“It would be unwise in our judgment to proceed with the election scheduled for April 28, without having in advance a thorough discussion of these problems nor will they produce tangible results for the democratic ideal in Jewish life unless public opinion is duly prepared to act, through preliminary discussion.”
