One Algerian Jew has been placed on the FLN (National Liberation Front) list for the elections to the country’s first Parliament due to be held September 2, He is M. Chouraqui, an Oran attorney and a close relative of Andre Chouraqui, former president of the Algerian Zionist Federation and now living in Israel. Nomination by the FLN is tantamount to election.
The FLN had first planned to have 18 Europeans represent the 500,000 French Algerians, but until now, only two have given their agreement, Mr. Chouraqui and another Oranese French Algerian. All others approached, including former Algiers Mayor Jacques Chevallier, who helped mediate the cease-fire between the European minority and the FLN, refused to accept the nominations.
