Most of the Jews in the strife-wracked Casbah quarter of Algiers have been evacuated to a temporary shelter set up by the Consistoire Israelite of Algiers, the central Jewish organization in the Algerian capital, it was reported here today.
Well informed Jewish sources here meanwhile discounted reports that Jews had been killed in the rioting touched off by General Charles de Gaulle’s visit to Algiers. These sources were reported to believe that no Jewish lives were lost in the rioting.
The Consistory, which met throughout the day yesterday, also applied to the French authorities to evacuate the small Jewish population left in the Casbah quarter of Algiers Some Jews were reported to have decided to remain in the Casbah to safeguard homes and properties.
ORT schools in Algiers were shut down when the rioting started. None of the schools suffered any damage. ORT maintains a network of schools in Algiers, Oran, Constantine and other major Algerian cities. ORT headquarters in Geneva expressed hope today that the schools would be opened within a few days.
