The indemnification deadline provided by law–March 31, 1963–will be met in North Rhine Westphalia, A. Dufhues, Minister of the Interior, told a press conference yesterday. He said that up to June 30 of this year, 193, 000 claims out of a total of 606, 000 had been processed. He estimated about 250, 000, 000 marks had been spent.
Asserting that both federal and provincial reviewing institutions had failed to recognize the “political importance of a rapid indemnification,” he stressed that they had thus hampered the decisions of indemnification officials. He said that measures are being taken to improve the situation.
