Yosef Almogi, chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization Executives, returned from a visit to Latin America today and said the five WZO emissaries who had been arrested in Argentina July 22 and released Aug. 3 would continue their work there. He said he has ordered sending two more emissaries to Argentina to strengthen the WZO’s work with youth and other Zionist activities.
Almogi, who met with the five emissaries, said that their arrest after attending a Zionist conference in Cordoba had nothing to do with their Zionist activities. He said the present regime in Buenos Aires is neither anti-Zionist nor anti-Jewish.
What happened, according to Almogi, was that a leftist group split several years ago from “El Committee” which is affiliated with the Israel Labor Zionist kibbutz movement, Ihud Hakvutzot VeHakibutzim, and joined left-wing circles in Argentina. The Argentine regime thought the seminar in Cordoba which was sponsored by “El Committee” was being held by the splinter group, Almogi explained. He said when the mistake was cleared up the Israelis were released.
