Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman said today after a lengthy talk with Harlan Cleveland, Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, that Israel was confident the Security Council will ask Syria to obey its obligations under the Armistice Agreement.
Mr. Harman emphasized to the State Department that Israel’s action was purely defensive to silence points from which shells were being fired. Mr. Harman cited the escalation of Syrian firing and termed it “very serious” because of the pattern of escalation which began with firing at a patrol and ended with shelling of other targets including two villages. The Ambassador made a thorough review of events which took place. He was accompanied by Mordechai Gazit, Minister at the Israel Embassy.
