Constantin Oumansky, Soviet ambassador in Mexico, and one-time Russian envoy in the United States, was killed today, together with his wife, when a Mexican air force plane on which they were traveling to Costa Rica, crashed a few minutes after taking off.
“I am proud to be a Jew, and I regret that I never learned Yiddish,” Oumansky told a Jewish delegation here which came to see him recently in connection with the interest of Mexican Jewry in the situation of Russian and Polish Jews in the USSR. Born in the city of Nikolayev, Oumansky took an active part in his early youth in the civil was in Russia. He was only 37 years old when he was named ambassador of the USSR in the United States in 1939.
Before entering the diplomatic field, Oumansky was associated with Tass, the official Soviet news agency, and was its managing director for a short time between his leaving Washington and assuming his post here.
