“The new immigration legislation marks a complete reversal of our previous policy- a landmark in our national history. We no longer are to be haven, a refuge for oppressed the world over. We found we could not be, and now we definitely abandon that theory.”
This was the statement made today by Benator Reed of Pennsylvania, in connection with the restricted immigration bill now being considered by a joint committee of both houses of Congress. The Senator further stated that the enactment of this immigration bill will result in a “distinct type of American citizen” and do away with “the hyphen vote.” Under it the United States will cease to be a “melting-pot.”
“I became convinced immigration was our biggest problem when i visited one country in Europe after the war and found 600,000 persons signed up to come to America when the country’s quota was only 40,000.”
