A total of $200,000 was collected and an additional $75,000 pledged for the support of Jewish and non-Jewish war orphans in the Soviet Union at the annual dinner of the American Birobidjan Committee last night attended by 800 persons. More than ten percent of the sum was contributed by the Mexican and Peruvian Jewish communities.
Senator Claude Pepper of Florida, calling for support of the campaign, pointed out that the U.S.S.R. has outlawed anti-Semitism. New York City Councilman Stanley M. Isaacs declared that “in giving shelter to half a million Jewish refugees, the U.S.S.R. has done more for the Jews than all the other countries put together.” Vilhjalmur Stefanscon, famous Arctic explorer and a vice-president of the committee, also spoke.
