The Purple Heart, awarded by the United States Army to men wounded in action, today was presented posthumously to Pvt. Zalman Goldberger, 23, at ceremonies in the colony of Ataroth, where the hero’s parents live and where he resided until he came to America. Goldberger, who was killed in the Southwest Pacific area last July, was a member of the local police force which defended the colony during the riots in 1936.
The presentation was made in the schoolhouse of the settlement by Col. V. A. Jackson, American military attache at Beirut, who read condolences from Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and President Roosevelt’s order awarding the decoration. Accepting the medal, Goldberger’s father thanked the United States Government and voiced the hope that the sacrifice of his son and the Jewish nation would not be forgotten after the war.
