The U.S. embassy in Baghdad has been instructed by the State Department to discuss with the Iraqi authorities the recent bombing of a Baghdad synagogue which resulted in the death of nine Jews and the injuring of a number of others, it was learned here today.
The American Ambassador in Baghdad was instructed to inform the Iraqi Government of the U.S. position that “minorities of whatever faith should be afforded full protection of local law and fair treatment in accordance with the objectives of the U.N. with respect to human rights and fundamental freedoms.” Information to this effect was conveyed today by the State Department to Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the Western Hemisphere section of the World Jewish Congress.
