The United States Government was urged last night to approach Israel diplomatically for consultations concerning the defense of the Middle East against Soviet aggression. The suggestion was made by Senator Irving M. Ives at a meeting in Carnegie Hall commemorating the third anniversary of Israel’s independence. The meeting was also addressed by Senator Edwin C. Johnson and Mayor Vincent R. Dspellitteri of New York.

The gathering was sponsored by the American Committee for the National Sick Fund of Israel, the Tel-Mai Fund, Inc., Palestine Pioneers Foundation, Inc., and the League for Jewish National Labor in Israel. It was the first of a series of meetings to be held this week to mark the establishment of the Jewish state. Both Senators emphasized in their speeches the importance of Israel as a key to the democratic world’s defense of the Middle East.
