Plans for the creation of a modern dental school in Israel, to be a faculty of the Hebrew University, were discussed here during the weekend at the first official meeting of the newly formed national dental division of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. A revealing picture of health conditions and the status of dental science in the State of Israel was presented to the audience of American dentists by Dr. Jacob Yardeni of Tel Aviv, a member of the Israeli Dental School Planning Committee.
Stressing the urgent need for hastening this project toward fruition, Dr. Yardeni declared: ”Dentists in Israel today average over 50 years of age. The majority of these men were trained a generation ago and emigrated to Israel at about that time. To date, no facilities have been set up for the training of younger men in modern dental methods. When one considers the continuous influx of more than 1,000 immigrants into Israel each day, the full impact of the seriousness of this situation becomes evident. American assistance is needed to assure the future of Israeli dentistry and the promotion of good oral health in the new State.”
