The agreement between the United States and Israel under which American publishers may sell books or newspapers in the Jewish State and be paid for them in dollars from the U.S. Treasury became effective today following an exchange of notes yesterday between U.S. Ambassador Monnett Davis and Premier David Ben Gurion in his capacity as Acting Foreign Minister during the absence of Israel’s Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett.
It is estimated that American books, magazines and newspapers worth about $250,000 are sold in Israel annually. The Israel Government agreed that the Israeli currency accumulated from the sale of American publications could be used in Israel by the U.S. Government for scientific, educational and cultural activities.
