Enactment of Federal fair employment practice will was urged yesterday by the American Jewish Committee in a telegram to Rep. John Lesinski, chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, the Committee announced here today.
The telegram, declaring the “discrimination in employment is immoral, unjust, anti-democratic, uneconomical and a serious handicap to the United States in its foreign relations,” was signed by Jacob Biaustein, president, Irving M. Engel, chairman of the executive committee, and Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president. The A.J.C. spokesman asserted that the experience of state fair employment practices laws in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut was convinced them that a federal act “would be a significant step in equalizing economic opportunity and eliminating the second-class status of large segments of our population.”
