A professorship in Jewish History and Hebrew Language will be established at Washington University here, it was announced today by the University and the American Jewish Committee which has undertaken to raise $75,000 to underwrite the professorship for a five-year-period.
Addressing the annual dinner meeting of the St. Louis chapter of the AJC, Thomas H. Eliot, chancellor-elect of the University, thanked the Committee for the initiative in making the professorship possible. Similar chairs in Jewish learning now exist at leading American universities.
Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the AJC, commended Washington University and declared: “The creation of the professorship in Jewish history, culture and the Hebrew language will result in a significant contribution, not only to the cultural life of St. Louis, but to American life itself.”
