Conferences with French cabinet officers and with leading Tunisian and Moroccan officials to safeguard the basic individual human rights of more than 320,000 Jews, will be held by three American Jewish Committee leaders, who left today on an emergency mission to Paris, Tunisia and French Morocco.
Irving M. Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee; Jacob Blaustein, honorary AJC president; and Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the AJC, will be joined in Paris by Zachariah Shuster, European director of the AJC. The four will then fly to Tunis, Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Marrakesh and Bled before returning to Paris.
Prior to their departure, the three leaders, in a statement on behalf of the AJC executive committee, declared that the situation in French North Africa is now undergoing fundamental changes. Although hopeful that the situation in Tunisia is progressing satisfactorily, they expressed particular concern over the situation of more than 220,000 Jews in Morocco, which they called “precarious and complicated.”
