The American Jewish Congress today announced the naming of a committee to select the 1951 recepients of the four Stephen Wise awards granted annually by the organization for outstanding contributions to the development and growth of Israel, the welfare and status of Jews throughout the world, civil rights and liberties in the United States and the advancement of Jewish education and learning.
The committee, whose selections will be announced on March 17, the date of the late Dr. Wise’s birthday, is headed by Judge Louis Levinthal of Philadelphia. Previous recipients of the awards, each bearing a cash value of $1,000 have included Prime Minister David Ben Gurion of Israel; Abba Eban, Israeli Ambassador to the United States; Dr. Joseph Schwartz in recognition of his work as overseas director of the Joint Distribution Committee; Professor Harry Wolfson of Harvard University; Professor Raphael Lemkin, ‘father’ of the Genoeide Convention; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Association for Jewish Education.
