Establishment of a President’s Committee on Housing Discrimination to withhold Federal funds from private or public housing projects that practice racial or religious bias, was proposed here today by the American Jewish Congress.
The proposal was made to the Federal Civil Rights Commission which began hearings here on discrimination in housing. The AJC charged that Federal funds were used to subsidize racial segregation in housing, both public and private. The greater harm, the AJC said, was done in the private area where Federal programs of urban renewal and redevelopment, mortgage guarantees and other aid to private builders have “actually encouraged discriminatory practices.”
