Paul A. Porter, American member of the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission, left here today for Washington for consultations with the State Department.
Asked whether his trip was connected with the apparent deadlock in the Arab-Israeli talks here, he replied: “No comment.” Israeli sources here thought that Mr. Porter might suggest that the Lausanne conference be closed down and the Arab-Israeli discussions be transferred to Lake Success since the U.N. General Assembly will open its session in New York next month, Reuters said.
A statement issued by the Conciliation Commission late this afternoon read: “Paul Porter is returning to the United States for routine consultations with officials of the American State Department. During his brief absence, Mr. Porter’s place on the Commission will be filled by Stuart W. Rockwell, alternate U.S. member of the Conciliation Commission.”
