Gen. Joseph T. McNarney has promised full cooperation in a plan prepared by the Joint Distribution Committee to provide vocational training and work projects for 185,000 displaced Jews throughout Germany, Dr. Joseph Schwartz, J.D.C. European director, announced at a press conference today.
Pointing out that the J.D.C. expects the DP problem to exist for two to three years, Dr. Schwartz said that the $60,000,000 which the organization spent in Europe this year will probably have to be increased to $100,000,000 during 1947. He declared that the problem of caring for displaced Jews has ceased to be one of relief alone.
Although basic relief must still be provided, Dr. Schwartz stated, the sharp reduction in the number of “infiltrees” entering the American zone plus the fact that few DP’s are emigrating, are responsible for turning the emphasis to a work program. Under such relatively stabilized conditions, he concluded, the J.D.C. is attempting to train the Jews to prepare them for eventual emigration and to aid their individual rehabilitation.
