The Central Conference of American Rabbis, representing the American Reform rabbinate, urged in a year-end statement today that the people of the United States should not “succumb to the feeling that war is inevitable.” The statement also asked Americans to beware of the idea that the search for peace was “synonymous with appeasement.”
Rabbi Albert G. Minda of Minneapolis, president of the CCAR, rebuked the Soviet Union in the statement for its “brazen” rupture of the moratorium on nuclear testing and its resumption of nuclear testing in the atmosphere in September and October this year. The statement expressed hope that 1962 would bring progress toward “a complete international ban on the testing and use of nuclear weapons.”
