Thirty-one American collegians sailed today on the Israel liner S.S. Zion, to spend a year of study at the Hebrew University. The students, 24 undergraduates and seven graduates, ranging in age from 18 to 23 years and representing a cross section of 21 U.S. schools of higher learning and one Canadian university, comprise the fourth successive annual group of Americans to participate in a special study project at the Hebrew University.
According to Prof. Oscar I. Janowsky, chairman of the Academic Council of the American Friends of Hebrew University, which sponsors the program in cooperation with the Jerusalem university, the students were selected after extensive and rigid screening from among 50 applicants registered for the project.
Dr. Janowsky explained that the program, which extends for 12 months, from the beginning of July 1958 until the end of June 1959, is divided into two parts. The first, of four months’ duration, is devoted to an intensive training course in Hebrew, with the remaining period of eight months concentrated on instruction in academic subjects.
