Jacob D. Fuchsberg, a prominent New York attorney, is leaving for Moscow tonight on a mission on behalf of the American Trial Lawyers Association which includes efforts on behalf of Gavriel Shapiro, the Greater New York Conference for Soviet Jewry informed the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today.
According to the Conference, Fuchsberg will attempt to open up relations between Russian and American attorneys and to “continue the dialogue” with Soviet authorities on the Gavriel Shapiro case. Reliable sources here said today that there were indications that the charges against Shapiro will be somewhat less severe than originally anticipated. The Russian-Jewish activist, Jailed June 12 and released last Friday pending trial, has had no formal charges filed against him. Jewish sources in the Soviet Union reported last month that he would be tried under Art. 198 of the Soviet penal code which is concerned with evasion of military duty. Shapiro, a Red Army reserve officer, has completed his required military duty.
