Official circles here today stated that American troops in Algeria are still at least 400 miles from where the bulk of the thousands of Jewish refugees being used for forced labor building the Trans-Sahara railroad in the desert are located.
Officials of the State Department said that the refugees, in common with everybody else in the occupied territory, would be under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Army authorities.
It was learned here today that all affidavits submitted on behalf of persons residing in unoccupied France who seek to emigrate to the United States will not be acted upon by the Visa Division of the State Department. These affidavits will be kept by the Department until such time as conditions warrant action. Likewise, no further hearings on such affidavits will be scheduled before the Inter-departmental Visa Review Committee.
