The American Zionist Council has expressed its concern to Secretary of State Dean Acheson regarding “the attempts of the Syrian Government to halt development of the Huleh region in Israel territory by challenging Israel’s right to transform the swamp area into a habitable, productive region.”
In a letter to Mr. Acheson, which was made public today, Louis Lipsky, chairman of the Council, urged the U.S. Government to use its good offices at the United Nations “to uphold the principle of protecting the rights of a people to develop their own resources.” Mr. Lipsky pointed out that the Council’s interest in the Huleh dates back to 1934 when contributions of American Zionists, enabled the Jewish National Fund to purchase the land.
