The action of the Palestine Government in refusing to permit Sholom Schwartzbard to enter the country was the subject of a question raised in the House of Commons today by Col. Josiah Wedgwood.
Col. Wedgwood drew attention to the fact that in putting the question in writing he had described Schwartzbard with the impartial term “slayer of Petlura.” In the printed question the term was altered to read “assassin of General Petlura,” which, he stated, “implies a certain amount of moral blame which I do not care to put on Schwartzbard for something of which he was acquitted.”
In reply Colonial Secretary Amery stated that the matter rests with High Commissioner Lord Plumer and that he is unable to say why the visa was withheld. Col. Wedgwood urged that the Secretary find out whether it was because of the execution of Petlura or because the quota was exhausted. Col Amery replied that he is prepared to inquire by letter of the Palestine Government.
