Dr. Amihud Gur, world-known forestry expert and the man responsible for the replanting of forests throughout Israel and large parts of Asia and Latin America, has died at the age of 84, it was learned at his home here. Gur died in his sleep during a visit to Boston, Mass. where he had gone to attend the wedding of a grandchild.
Gur was born in Mikve Israel in 1898 where his father, Yehuda Gur (Grasovsky) was teaching at the agricultural school while compiling one of the earliest Hebrew lexicons. Gur fought as a sergeant in the Jewish Brigade in World War I and again in the Haganah in 1948.
He held degrees from the Jerusalem Teachers Seminary, Oxford, the University of California and Yale. His textbook on forestry planting in arid areas is regarded as an international classic. He was invited extensively to advise world governments on afforestation matters. Gur bequeathed his body to science.
