The Dutch population in Nazi-occupied Holland, which continues to display, on every possible occasion, its sympathy with the Jews, has named the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam “The Milky Way” because of the many “stars” seen there as a result of the introduction of the yellow Star of David, the London Evening Standard reports today.
The paper states that Jewish travelling salesmen who must wear the yellow insignia are now more welcome than ever when they visit their Dutch clients. It also reports that when the mayor of Hilversum recently ordered Jews to do their shopping between 5 and 6 P.M. only, expecting them to be crowded out by non-Jewish shoppers, the Dutch population arranged not to appear in the stores at that hour so as to give the Jews a chance to secure foodstuffs and other commodities from the friendly Dutch shopkeepers.
