An Australian whose father was critically injured in the 1997 Maccabiah Games bridge collapse in Israel is being honored as Young Australian of the Year. Bryan Gaensler, 25, holds a NASA Hubble fellowship and is studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The award is part of the country’s annual Australia Day celebrations. Gaensler’s father, Frank, is alive even though he was pronounced clinically dead following the collapse of the bridge at the opening of the 1997 games.
