An electrical fire shut down the only kosher food store in Oakland. Oakland Kosher Foods in Oakland, Calif., was heavily damaged in a one-alarm fire early Aug. 2, according to local media reports. It is the only source of kosher meat, as well as an array of other kosher and Israeli products, for Jews in the heavily populated East Bay, which includes the cities of Oakland and Berkeley. Two other local stores carry kosher chicken.
Consumers now must travel to San Francisco for kosher meat. Oakland Kosher is expected to reopen in several weeks.
