An evangelical Christian group said local prosecutors in Russia were using a controversial law on religion to shut down the group’s activities. A spokesman for the Word of Life Church said the Magadan district prosecutor had accused the church of using hypnosis to induce hallucinations among worshipers. U.S. officials and human rights groups have criticized the law, which imposes restrictions on religions that have not been operating in Russia for at least 15 years.
