An Israeli legislator called on the Jewish state to acknowledge what he termed its shared responsibility with Arab nations for the Palestinian refugee problem and to initiate talks aimed at helping the refugees. The Labor Party’s Yossi Katz, the party’s liaison to the Palestinians, reiterated earlier remarks that Israel should allow up to 100,000 refugees to return within the framework of family reunification. Katz was reprimanded by the secretary of the party, who said Prime Minister Ehud Barak has stated that he will not allow the refugees to return.
