Five hundred acres of abandoned swamp land in Malmesbury, in Southern England, which, according to ancient records, was owned 1,200 years ago by Athelstan, King of the Saxons, have been reclaimed through the efforts of members of the Zionist youth movement and are now producing hundreds of tons of food, it is reported in the London News Chronicle today by that paper’s agricultural editor.
The Chronicle says that 40 young men, who are receiving agricultural training in preparation for going to Palestine, are working the land. The youths live in a nearby hostel and pool all their wages. The Agricultural Offier of Wiltshire, the county in which Malmesbury is located, is quoted as stating that the young Zionists are “among the best extra workers we have taken on. They learn quickly, work well and seem the happiest persons in the community.”
