The Anglo-American conference on refugee problems will be held at the earliest practicable date and will not be delayed by difficulties over finding a meeting-place, Secretary of State Cordell Hull said today.
This was taken as a reference to Canadian annoyance over the fact that Hull’s recently published note to Great Britain suggested Ottawa as a site for the conference without his having consulted the Canadian Government. He said the place of the conference had not yet been determined finally.
Hull confirmed that his current conversations with British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden dealt in part with the most recent phases of the Jewish refugee problem, among others. He said that he and Mr. Eden had met each other half way in their thoughts, ideas and efforts to find ways of advancing the problem further toward a satisfactory solution. Every attention was being given to this, he added.
