British and American officials admitted here today that the joint statement issued last week by the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom, announcing acceptance of Hungary’s offer to permit the emigration of Jews from Hungary to Palestine and other lands was deficient in not clarifying the issue as to whether Jews from Hungary would be admitted in Palestine.
Fear was expressed here during the week-end that the offer made by the Hungarian Government to permit the emigration of Jews from Hungary may not materialize now that it has become known that the German Government is refusing transit visas for Hungarian Jews to Sweden and Switzerland and promises no safe conduct of such Jews to any destination.
The War Refugee Board was in the meantime informed by the American Palestine Foundation that a sum of $650,000 has been forwarded by the Foundation to its headquarters in Jerusalem to be used for the rescue and rehabilitation of Hungarian Jews in line with the policy announced last week by the governments of the United States and of Britain.
The United Jewish Appeal announced financial aid of American Jews will be given for the construction of 2,500 small housing units in Palestine to house refugees from Hungary and the Balkan countries who are expected to emigrate to Palestine.
