The Council of the Anglo-Jewish Association voted yesterday to withdraw its representatives from the Board of Deputies of British Jews in view of the failure to reconstitute the Joint Foreign Committee. The latter body, which was liquidated in 1943, consisted of an equal number of representatives of the Deputies and the Association and took joint action on matters affecting Jews abroad.
Speakers at the Council session stressed the “anomalous position” of the Association in remaining a part of the Board, although the policies of the two groups are opposed. The Board is militantly pro-Zionist, while the Association is non-Zionist. Leanerd Stein, president of the AJA, discussing the forthcoming U.N. meeting on Palestine, deplored “some of the none too felicitous Jewish Agency pronouncements in New York.”
