The Soviet cabinet has ratified the relief agreement recently concluded between the London Federation of Jewish Relief Organizations and the Comzet, government department for settling the Jews on the land, according to a cable received here by the Federation. The ratification follows on the special mission recently undertaken to Russia by Dr. D. Jochelman on behalf of the Federation.
He negotiated an agreement with the Soviet government according to the provisions of which the government agrees to add a grant of $250,000 to the sum of $100,000 contributed by the Federation during the forthcoming year for the relief of suffering Jews. Both amounts will be distributed by the Federation’s representatives.
The $350,000 will be allotted in the following proportions: 75 per cent for reconstructive relief and 25 per cent for the opening and upkeep of kitchens, food centers, medical institutions, homes for the aged and children’s institutions. The Soviet government also authorized the Federation to bring into Russia tools, machinery and materials duty free. The Federation is also permitted to purchase and rent property and premises of every description to be used in the interests of the suffering Jewish population.
The Federation is now conducting a campaign to raise $200,000 for its relief work.
