Another synagogue has been destroyed by fire in Bohemia-Moravia, with a fire brigade looking on, it was reported today from Prague.
The blaze, officially attributed to an “unknown” source, occurred at Hrusschau on the Polish border, near Maehrisch-Ostrau. Incendiary destruction of synagogues in the German protectorate has become an almost daily occurrence, according to reliable private advices from Prague.
Despite intercession by a rabbi, supported by the Catholic clergy, the Gestapo has refused to release Jews arrested in Maehrisch-Ostrau earlier this week during Kaddish services at the home of a Mr. Krieger for his deceased son. The Gestapo maintained that a “minyan” constituted an “assembly dangerous to the State.”
Copies of a German decree banning Jews from public bathing places, parks and similar places have been published in Budweis, Bohemia. The journal Wirtschaft reported that a decree similar to the German decree of 1935, banning Jews as druggists, is under preparation in Bohemia-Moravia. According to official statistics, there are 670 Jewish druggists in the protectorate, or less than one-third of the total.
