Forty-four responses by Jewish intellectuals throughout the world to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion’s letter asking for their definitions of “who is a Jew” will be published in a book, “Jewish Identity, ” of which Baruch Litvin, Orthodox Jewish leader in Mount Clemens, is editor.
Among those whose replies are to be published are the late Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog, the late Rabbi Y.L. Maimon, Israeli Chief Army Chaplain Rabbi Solomon Goren, Israel Supreme Court Justice Moshe Silberg, Justice Haim Cohen, Dr. Joseph Soloveitchik, American Orthodox rabbinical leader; the Lubavitcher Rebbe Menahem Schneerson; Dr. Louis Finkelstein, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; Dr. Solomon Freehof, Reform rabbinical leader; the late Prof. Yeheskel Kaufmann, Prof. Hugo S. Bergman, Prof. Ernst Simon, Prof. Harry A. Wolfson, the late Prof. Saul Lieberman, Prof. Abraham Heschel, Dr. Mordecai Kaplan, Sir Leon Simon, Y. Agnon and others.
