Anti-defamation League Says Desecration of Jewish Graves in Chicago Checked

The office of the Anti-Defamation League today issued a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency declaring that the reports in Chicago and New York newspapers on the mass-desecration of Jewish graves in Chicago cemeteries are based on acts of vandalism which started about two years ago but which ceased six months back. The statement reads:

“The Chicago office of the Anti-Defamation League has investigated the stories published with respect to vandalism in Jewish cemeteries there, which allegedly occurred during the past few days. As a matter of fact, this vandalism started two years ago, but according to the best available evidence and investigation, they stopped about six months ago. This latter fact is confirmed by the caretakers of the cemeteries. Thus, the statement that these acts occurred in the past few days seems unfounded. We have no desire to minimize the reprehensible nature of these acts. On the contrary, we condemn them. We have engaged in considerable activity to counteract them. This statement is issued merely to correct the reports which have appeared in the press.”
